At what age can a child be diagnosed

BPD traits and behaviors typically arise in early adulthood. However some individuals begin to show symptoms of the disorder much earlier - even in childhood. Symptoms of BPD can mimic developmental behaviors typical of adolescence (e.g. unstable mood swings, depression, anxiety). The primary difference between BPD and adolescent behaviors is that during adolescence these symptoms occur for brief periods of time, whereas a person with BPD is likely to have more enduring or constant episodes. For this and other reasons, many therapists are hesitant make a diagnosis of BPD until the child turns 18. However the DSM-5, the current edition of the diagnostic guidebook for mental health professionals, permits a diagnosis of BPD in patients younger than 18 if BPD symptoms persist for at least 1 year.
