There is a set of criteria for making a diagnosis of borderline personality disorder. Yet, despite clear evidence that BPD is likely the cause of their problems, it is extremely difficult for people to get that diagnosis. It is even harder to get a diagnosis of BPD for an adolescent. Waiting for young people to reach adulthood wastes valuable time in getting the right treatment and prolongs the suffering of the entire family.
