Loss of Contact with Reality
Many people diagnosed with BPD feel suspicious about events in their lives. They struggle with feelings of suspicion and paranoia about the intentions of people around them. When they are stressed, they may lose touch with reality and become disassociated. Dissociation is an involuntary experience that occurs when a person feels disconnected from themselves or their environment. They may feel disconnected from their thoughts, feelings, memories, and surroundings. It can affect their sense of identity and perception of time. Disassociation feels like being spaced out, foggy, or as if one exists outside of their own body.
