Intense Unstable Relationships
It is very common for someone with Borderline Personality Disorder to have intense and unstable relationships. Although people with BPD desire intimate relationships and care for others it is difficult for them to sustain stable relationships, in part because of their extreme and volatile feelings. They may believe that someone is perfect one moment and then suddenly believe that person is not perfect. This tendency to idealize or devalue a relationship can result in profound feelings of disappointment and increase emotional mood swings. The person with BPD may have profound concerns that someone will leave them and often misinterpret even minor events as signs of imminent abandonment. For a person with BPD all of this emotional conflict can negatively impact the ability to maintain close relationships.
