Peter Fonagy, PhD
Peter Fonagy, PhD is the co-developer of Mentalization Based Treatment for Borderline Personality Disorder. Mentalization Based Treatment is rooted in attachment theory and the primary goals of treatment are to improve mentalization skills, learn how to work with current emotions and establish real relationships.
Dr. Fonagy is well known for his contributions to the development of contemporary psychoanalysis, helping to improve the dialogue between analysts and cognitive therapists. He has played a major role in the evaluation of psychotherapy research, particularly the effectiveness of treatment, including medical and psychosocial therapies for children and young people.
In addition, Dr. Fonagy is Head of the Division of Psychology and Language Sciences at University College London¹, Chief Executive of the Anna Freud National Centre for Children and Families², Consultant to the Child and Family Program at the Menninger Department of Psychiatry³ and Behavioral Sciences at Baylor College of Medicine⁴, and holds visiting professorships at Yale and Harvard Medical Schools. He has published over 500 scientific papers, 260 chapters and has authored or co-authored 19 books.
